The world-renowned “fingerstyle” guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel has just released Tommy Emmanuel – Music Gone Public, a DVD collection of “greatest hits” from Tommy’s previous PBS airings. It includes seven never-before-seen performances and musical collaborations, and features personal stories about the songs and performances from Tommy himself.

The first season of Music Gone Public – Curated Concerts for Public Television was met with enormous success. The season featured performances by artists such as Tommy Emmanuel, Frankie Moreno, Frank Vignola, Joe Craven, and Antsy McClain, to name a few. Emmanuel’s program was a bit unique. Rather than highlight one concert, his episode combined many of his great performances for PBS over the last decade from previous features such as Center Stage, Tommy Emmanuel & Friends – Live from The Balboa Theatre, and Live and Solo from Pensacola, Florida.

Paul Reed Smith is synonymous with quality when it comes to building instruments. He is widely
regarded as one of the top guitar makers in the world and has produced instruments for top-level
guitarists like Carlos Santana, Mark Tremonti and John Mayer. His instruments are known for their
precise craftsmanship and wonderful sound, making him a staple in the music community. If you’re
playing a PRS guitar, you have an understanding of your craft.

Although Paul is most famous for his skills as a craftsman, he is also a talented musician who deftly
applies his skills in the PRS Band. Composed of the world-famous Grainger brothers (Greg & Gary) in the
rhythm section, Michael Ault & Bill Nelson on guitars, Mia Samone delivering killer vocals, and Paul Reed
Smith’s bold lyrical tone on guitar; the PRS Band has performed all over the world including England,
Germany, Japan, China, Canada, and Italy. The music is what Paul calls “Chesapeake Gumbo” – their own
combination of funk, rock, R & B, fusion, and DC/Baltimore groove music. With great musicians
contributing including session king, Brent Mason and Mother’s Finest bassist, Wyzard, the group’s stone
soup approach weaves together both talent and song-craft to turn in a CD that music lovers will enjoy.

Nicolas Meier is a virtuoso guitarist that has an expansive vision as to what can be done with the instrument. He has a creative vigor that allows him to master different styles of play with conviction, making him one of the leading players in the world today. The Swiss-born musician continually pushes his own evolution through his dedication to the guitar as well as his uncanny ability to create music that defies convention.

After touring the world extensively for several years as a member of The Jeff Beck Group, Nicolas Meier is quickly making the transition from a name that few recognize to a man who needs no introduction. In less than two decades of being a professional musician, he has been involved in more than twenty albums encompassing a host of different styles and genres. Without question, Meier is one of the most capable, inventive voices on his instrument in the world, today.

On his latest effort, INFINITY, Meier enlists the help of bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Vinnie Colaluta to serve as the foundational pieces for his delightfully divergent paths. It takes strong musicians to tackle a variety of styles, and these two perform beautifully. The album features eleven songs which showcase Meier’s adaptability and ability to create his own style. The music transports listeners to places all over the world, using elements of Middle-Eastern music as well as more familiar European elements from his own background. Through this, Meier provides compelling, convincing evidence that he’s one of today’s most accomplished and visionary guitarists.

Dewa Budjana is no stranger to the big stage. He’s widely considered one of the greatest artists in Indonesia, the worlds 4th most populated country, and has achieved international recognition by guitar greats like Carlos Santana and John Frusciante as being one of the instrument’s most proficient players. His original group in Indoneisa, Gigi, sold millions of records while they were together and Dewa has built upon this legacy into his solo career.

The new album, ZENTUARY, is a sprawling jazz/prog epic that spans two discs, taking the listener through the various elements of Budjana’s style. He is an expert at blending in the standard aspects of prog and jazz with the sonic influences of his home country, creating a unique sound with many twists and turns. While a double album can be a tall order, Budjana’s enlisted the help of heavy hitters Tony Levin, Jack Dojohnette, and Gary Husband to make the songs biting and intriguing with every instrumental part proving vital. The album is sure to be essential listening for fans of the genre.

The album’s release coincides with the beginning of another special project for the famed guitarist. Museum Gitarku is scheduled for opening in Indonesia in the middle of 2017 and will feature Budjana’s collection of over 200 guitars, many signed by legends like Steve Vai, Buddy Guy, Sting, and more. Being a cultural icon in Indonesia, the museum will serve as a way for Dewa to give back to his community as well as be a destination for guitar aficionados around the globe. In this regard, Zentuary serves not only as a major release for the artist, but also as a launch pad for the next phase of his cultural legacy.

ZAP starring guitarist Sean McKee releases Air Traffic Control, available now!

August 26th, 2016

“Air Traffic Control” started as a 60 second piece that was commissioned by Lee Abrams (Co-Founder of XM Radio) to have Emmy-nominated composer Sean McKee write a piece of music in the style of Frank Zappa, and produce a video to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his passing. McKee wrote and performed all instruments, including recording the keyboard parts using a then-prototype MIDI guitar from Inspired Instruments.

Besides being a musician, McKee is known as a pioneer in the field of image processing, creating technology used for new movies and classic film restorations, along with 2D to 3D conversions, with the technology he led development on being used daily in Hollywood. For several years, one of his clients was Gail Zappa, Frank’s widow, and he worked on restoring film elements from Frank’s archive, and also helped to recover lost video masters that Gail hadn’t seen in years.

According to McKee, “When I heard the news of Gail’s passing last October, I was deeply saddened, she was very kind to me, and an incredibly smart woman who pioneered the concept of artists’ retaining the rights to the master recordings. I decided to take the 60 second piece and finish it as a proper song, as a memorial to Gail and tribute to Frank, who was a big influence on my playing.”

McKee crafted the song starting from the existing 60 second guitar solo, building a complete song around it, similar to methods Zappa incorporated. He then contacted Ike Willis, the voice on numerous Zappa albums, and asked him to sing on the track and add another guitar solo. Die hard Zappa fans will also notice a lyrical reference to the infamous ‘White Zone’. McKee continues, “The original solo I wrote is what ends the song, and Ike takes the first guitar solo. If you close your eyes, you can see Frank and hear the lineage. When Frank got sick, he asked Ike to carry on his music, and while this is a new, original song, his playing and voice carries the torch for both the legacy fans as well as a new generation of listeners.”

McKee then asked Grammy-nominated bassist Chip Z’Nuff (Enuff Z’Nuff, Missing Persons, Adler’s Appetite) to play bass on all parts except for the bass under the solos, which McKee had recorded originally.

The end result is a modern interpretation and homage to a timeless and unique style.
